Post-operative quality of life in ACL injuries: a short-term monthly comparison Author : Feier Andrei Co-authors : Branea Radu, Coman Oana, Ostopovici Marta, Kovacs Mihai Scientific coordonator : lecturer, Russu Octav MD, PhD; MARISIENSIS 2014 International Congress for Students Young Physicians and Pharmacists 1

Introduction Anterior cruciate ligament  situated in the middle cavity of the knee joint  originates from the anterior intercondylar area of the tibia and ends on the lateral femoral condyle. 2

ACL tears  a consequence of a violent tension force applied to the knee  factors that lead to injuries: sudden deceleration, landing and pivoting during sports Femur and tibia twists in opposite directions under the full body weight Video 3

Video source : © Torson, Cityclinic 4

ACL reconstruction Two tunnels Hamstring autograft was used in all cases 5

Quality of life  a conceptual model that tries to present the patient’s status, perspective and satisfaction level using numbers “Quality of life is more important than life itself” Alexis Carrel Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1912) 6

Purpose of the study  to determine and compare the quality of life on a monthly basis on different groups of patients who underwent ACL reconstruction. 7

Materials and method  Short-term retrospective study  36 patients, 27 male and 9 female, divided into six groups according to the monthly period when the surgical intervention took place  October 2013 and March 2014  Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic in Tîrgu Mure. 8

Materials and method  Tegner Lysholm knee scoring scale  describes 8 commonly affected everyday life abilities  the score ranges from 0 to 100, a higher value means a better life condition 9

Tegner Lysholm knee scoring scale 10

Distribution by gender  other studies have shown that the incidence of ACL tear in female is two to eight times higher than in men [1]  our study: 11

Distribution by age 12

Results 13

Conclusions  the study shows a significant increase in the patients’ quality of life from one month to another  patients are able to retain almost full function of the knee in approximately five to six months from the surgery 14

Discussions Pros: - scoring scale often used in this type of studies - in accordance with recent and old studies [3][4] - often approached subject Cons: - short term study - sample of patients too small 15
