Candidate Application Process Candidates apply on TEACH & pay with a credit card (know your userid & password). NYS Fingerprinting clearance is needed. (MU has intake forms & refers you to GST BOCES for fingerprint rolling) Only NYSED reviews credentials for those applying under reciprocity. Official transcripts, copy of your PA cert., exams & workshop certs. are always needed. Transcripts are valid 3 yrs (kept on file 3 yrs). MU’s Etranscripts are not accepted by NYSED.

Certification Levels-Reciprocity Conditional Initial (valid 1 year) 7/9/14 exams,workshops now (need PA cert in same subject/grade range, app/fee, etc.) needed for conditional initial Initial (valid another 4 years) NOTE: Exams changed 5/1/14 (need 45 exams & 34 workshops...no additional fee) Professional (valid continuously with PD) (need app/fee, master’s degree, mentoring, 3yrs teachin.) On-going professional development (PD) (175hrs/5yrs needed forever more)

Conditional Initial Certification Application (TEACH) & $100 fee Official Bachelor’s transcript w/degree conferral is needed (no e-transcripts) Full NYSED fingerprint clearance Copy of current PA certificate in same subject/grade range All exams & workshops also needed

Initial Certification Within 1 yr from date of conditional initial cert., initial certification is required No application or fee is needed (those on file from conditional initial count for this) edTPA needed NOTE: Exams changed 5/1/14. New rules 7/9/14. All other exams, workshops must be on file for conditional initial certificate child abuse identification; SAVE; autism; DASA. EAS, ALST, CST exams needed for cond.initial.

Professional Certification Application & $100 fee are needed (w/in 5 yrs from date of conditional initial cert.) Official Master’s transcript w/degree conferral is needed (no e-transcripts) 12 grad crs. in your subject/content area mentoring form (to prove mentoring) 3 yrs f/t teaching in the subject/grade of your cert. (you enter on TEACH)

Professional Development Begins July 1 AFTER the date of your professional certificate You keep a log & annual hours entry is recorded on TEACH 175 hrs/5 years needed Public NYS school record this in TEACH for you. Otherwise, you record this. Keep copies of logs for your records

Pathway Selection (TEACH) Reciprocity is the pathway for your first- level certificate that you possess in PA For the 2 nd level certificate in NYS, “certificate progression” is the pathway you will request on TEACH If you want a certificate you did not gain in PA, the pathway is individual evaluation for additional certificate

Evaluator (TEACH) Only NYSED reviews applications under reciprocity BOCES or NYSED can review certificate progression applications BOCES or NYSED can review individual evaluations for additional certificate Working with/through NYSED will always take longer518/ achrecother.html

Additional Certificates For some candidates, gaining additional certification (after 1 initial) is not difficult. i.e. a Bio tchr needs app, fee, 30 crs in Physics & CST in Physics for Physics certification i.e. Stdts w/Dis (SWD) 1-6 can often gain SWD birth-2 certification w/1 course. SWD7-12 Generalists must collaborate (are not teacher “of record”)

Applying to School Districts Most districts have their own employment application process. Most require: application, cover letter, resume, copy of transcripts, proof of NY tchr. cert. (print from TEACH), 3 ref. letters. View websites to gain employment info. i.e. districtswww.gstboces.org Retain copies of your materials.

NYSED Regulations No time-limited certificates are printed. TEACH is viewed to verify such. Professional certificates will be printed. The NYSED site is a great resource: In the future, only 2 evaluations per cert. application fee will be allowed. Regulations changed 7/9/14
