10/25/20152 DEFINITION- A rhetorical trope concerning the shifts of imagery. Synesthesia takes one type of sensory contribution and commingles with another different sense in an impractical way. The use of synesthesia allows us to describe how a smell looks, or how a color sounds.

When we say a musician hits a "blue note" while playing a sad song, we engage in synesthesia. When we talk about a certain shade of color as a "cool green," we mix tactile or thermal imagery with visual imagery the same way. When we talk about a "heavy silence," we also use synesthesia. 10/25/20153

DEFINITION- Organization of words into sentences, clauses or even phrases. Syntax can reveal a writer's level of creativity and ability to take risks. 10/25/20154

“It was carelessly, at first, like a man chiefly accustomed to look inward, and to whom external matters are of little value and import unless they bear relation to something within his mind.” “Yes; quaint and curious war is!” To your house we are going. 10/25/20155

DEFINITION-A distinct, recurring or unifying idea. Sometimes the theme can be very elusive. Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas discovered in any literary work. 10/25/20156

Romeo and Juliet: “True love involves taking risks.” “Discrimination can ruin the opportunity of happiness in love” “Romantic love between two people can have an unbreakable bond” Martin Luther king: No matter what peoples differences are, they can still work together in harmony All men are created equally. Night : “Eliezer’s Struggle to Maintain Faith in a Benevolent God.” “Inhumanity Toward Other Humans.” “The Importance of Father-Son Bonds.” 10/25/20157

Fable - The theme of a fable is its moral. Parable -The theme of a parable is its teaching. Fiction- The theme is not directly stated. Non-fiction- The theme may be directly stated. 10/25/20158

DEFINITION-The way somebody says something as an indicator of what the person is feeling or thinking. Tone describes the authors attitude toward his audience and own writings. 10/25/20159

Martin Luther’s speech, “I have a dream.” Tone-determined, passionate, hopeful, optimistic & willing. The Last Song Tone- regretful & forgiving. A Walk to Remember Tone- Romantic and adoring. 10/25/201510

Definition- A statement or concept that is put forward as a premise to be corroborated. A thesis statement makes a claim and expresses the authors point of view, purpose, or position. 10/25/201511

"Although Miss Rose appears clueless, her nail file and stiletto heels are the evidence that it was she who broke into the library and literally put her enemy, Professor Plum, in between two heavy copper book-ends.” In the “Atlanta Compromise Address” Washington uses the rhetorical strategies of metaphors, the effective use of anaphora and enthusiastic diction to portray his view that the blacks and whites should live in harmony. Students with higher levels of success rates in solving calculus problems tend to be frequent exploiters of metacognitive thinking strategies. 10/25/201512
