The Epidemiology of Foot and Ankle Injuries in Sports A 6 1/2 year review of 16,754 injuries seen in a multi-specialty sports medicine clinic found that 25 percent of the 12,681 injuries in the top 19 sports occurred at the ankle and foot.

85% of low back pain due to loss of structural integrity between spine and lower extremities 44% of injuries to runners involved the foot 50-60% of runners are injured severely enough to stop training for 3 or more days 60% of running injuries occur at 30 plus mpw 65% of runners pronate 63% of running injuries between years old 84% of runners under 40 years old 75% have external tibial torsion syndrome

Common Injuries in Runners: Diagnosis, Rehab & Prevention Factors contributing to malalignment: leg length discrepancy, femoral anteversion, asymmetry of hip motion, knee position, tibial varum and particularly excessive pronation … should be carefully assessed.

Effect of Axial Load and Ankle Position on Ankle Stability Ankle stability is related to articular congruity with increased load- bearing emphasizes the importance of anatomical restoration of the ankle mortise in the injury state.

DR. MALLY’S “5 STEP” FOOT SUBLUXATION BIOMECHANICS

A 2-4mm joint space should be visualized across the talo-tibial joint. When the talus and calcaneus are subluxed, often a large radiolucent joint space is visualized approx. 5 mm. Superior and inferior calcaneus and cuboid articular surfaces should be congruent. Joint spaces throughout the foot should be 2mm throughout and symmetrical across the joint This talar prominence beak fits into a corresponding recess on the calcaneus. It may lie posterior to it when talus is subluxated.
