 Understanding connections between literary elements facilitates the reader’s ability to make meaning of text.  What techniques do authors use to help the reader make connections?  Literary techniques are used to heighten interest, appeal to an audience, and effectively communicate a message.  How do authors use literary techniques to communicate a message?

Visual representation Graphic organizer

 Collect examples of graphic organizers for students to select from to use to complete the Performance Indicator. Select one and prepare an example as a model for students.

 This Instructional Routine assesses Performance Indicator: “After reading a fictional text, create a visual representation (e.g., graphic organizer) analyzing and evaluating how the literary elements of plot (non-linear and linear), character development, and point of view contribute to the author’s message.”
