ORDER OF OPERATIONS MATH 7

ORDER OF OPERATIONS Do the problem x (-2) What answers did you come up with? Which one is correct and why? Try (-9 + 7) x 9 + 3

PEMDAS In mathematics, there is a special order that you must follow when doing a problem with many operations. Parenthesis (or other grouping symbols) Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction

PEMDAS Something to help us remember the order: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally Could also use PEMDAS to remember

Important Information Grouping Symbols: Parenthesis, absolute value symbols, “fraction bar division”, and any other type of brackets These symbols are treated like parenthesis, meaning that the things inside must be done first.

Other Important Information If you ever have a problem in which only addition and subtraction are left to do, you must work from left to right. The same goes for multiplication and division.

Examples 12 – 6 x 2 = 18( ) = 64 - (-5) + 37 x 2 = x 2 – (-8 – 4) 2 =

Properties/Homework The worksheet that I handed out to you has several properties on it that need to be memorized. You will be quizzed on these eventually. Make sure you know them. Homework is to memorize the properties and worksheet on order of operations.
