Lesson 2.3 Properties

= 15 4 x 5 = 20 addendSUM factorPRODUCT addend factor

Five Properties 1.Commutative 2. Associative 3. Distributive 4. Identity Property of Multiplication 5. Identity Property of Addition

Commutative Property The property that states that if the order of addends or factors is changed, the sum or product is the same = 2 +6 (both = 8) 2 x 5= 5 x 2 (both = 10)

Associative Property (8 + 5) + 4 = 8 + (5 + 4) both = 17 (6 x 7) x 2 = 6 x (7 x 2) both = 84 The property that states that whatever way addends or factors are grouped does not change the sum or the product.

Distributive Property The property that states that multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products. 4 x (7 + 3) = (4 x 7) + (4 x 3) both = 40 7 x (8 + 4) = (7 x 8) + (7 x 4) both = 84

Identity Property of Multiplication The property that states that the product of any number and 1 is that number. 5 x 1 = 5 12 x 1 = 12 1 x 9 = 9

Identity Property of Addition The property that states that the sum of zero and any number is that number = = = 34
