Adding fractions with like denominators is easy Like denominators are fractions with the same denominator To complete this fraction sentence: = Add the numerators Keep the denominators the same 5 8 Add the numerators Keep the denominators the same

Here are more examples: = = = 20 25

Adding fractions with unlike denominators takes more work. Unlike denominators are fractions with different denominators. To add these fractions, we need to change them so the denominators are the same (Least Common Denominator - LCD)

To answer this question: First we need to find the multiples of both denominators The LCD is 8 ! Our fraction denominators will now be 8: Now we only need calculate the numerators!

First we find out what number we use to multiply the numerator to the LCD: x1x2 We use these numbers to multiply and find the numerator. 32

Let us look at some examples:

x4x3 46 The LCD is 12.

Let us look at one more:

x5x The LCD is 35.

Once you have found the LCD – you simply add the numerators and the denominators stay the same! = = = 31 35

Multiplying fractions is easy x It doesn’t matter whether the denominators are the same or different! To complete this fraction sentence: x = Multiply the numerators Multiply the denominators 6 20 Multiply the numerators Multiply the denominators

Here are more examples: x = x = x = Don’t forget to simplify/reduce your fraction!

Dividing fractions only has a couple of steps The first thing to do is change it into a multiplication problem. 3 4 x 5 2 To do this, you simply turn-over (invert) the numerator and denominator of the latter fraction.

Our question started as: Then we changed it to: 3 4 x 5 2 We simply complete this problem in the same regular way we answer any multiplying fraction problem.

That is: 3 4 x 5 2 Don’t forget to simplify/reduce the fraction! Multiply the numerators Multiply the denominators = 15 8
