This document was created at The British Cartoon Archive - Cartoon group - Neville Chamberlain October 1938 We are now familiar with the events of September-October 1938 in which Britain and France agreed to German Chancellor Adolf Hitler's demands for control of the Sudetenland area of Czechoslovakia. The decision was controversial at the time, and historians are still discussing the events of that period today. Of course it is easy to make judgements in hindsight, and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is generally seen as a weak man who was deceived by Hitler. But is that how he was seen at the time?

This document was created at The British Cartoon Archive - Record code: GS0496 No caption Sidney 'George' Strube : Daily Express(c) The British Cartoon Archive In this cartoon we see Chamberlain and Mars, the god of war from Roman mythology. What impression do you get of Chamberlain from this cartoon?

This document was created at The British Cartoon Archive - Record code: DL1374 Our new defence Low; David ( ) : Evening Standard(c) The British Cartoon Archive This cartoon was produced by David Low, a bitter critic of Hitler and of Chamberlain's policy of appeasement. Low's cartoons have been used in many history textbooks and have shaped the way Chamberlain has been seen by later generations. How does the view of Chamberlain in this cartoon contrast with the view in the previous cartoon?
