The Inquiry's Aim: Lord Justice Leveson stated on 28 July 2011 that the focus of the Inquiry is ‘the culture, practices and ethics of the press’ in the context of the latter’s relationship with the public, the police and politicians. The Inquiry aims to draw recommendations, if any, for the future, with particular regards to press regulation, governance and other systems of oversight.

YearEvent 2000 Rebecca Brooks is appointed Editor of News of The World aged 32. She begins a campaign to name and shame alleged pedophiles and also for public access to the sex offenders register. March 2002 School girl Milly Dowler disappears in Walton- on-Thames aged just Rebecca Brooks is appointed Editor for The Sun. Andy Coulson becomes Editor of the Sunday paper. Wade tells parliament that her paper paid police for information. They later denied this. November 2005 Officials of the Royal Court complain about voic s being intercepted after the News Of The World publish an article on Prince Williams knee injury.

YearEvent August 2006 Detectives arrest News Of The World’s royal editor Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire over allegations they hacked phones of the royal household. January 2007 Clive Goodman is jailed for four months. Glenn Mulcaire is given a six month prison term after both admitted to conspiring to intercept phone signals. January 2007 After Goodman and Mulcaire were sentenced, Andy Coulson resigns from his role as NOTW’s editor. He says he takes ‘ultimate responsibility’ though he knew nothing of the offences in advance. May 2007 Andy Coulson becomes the Conservative Party’s director
