What is a Semicolon? ; Essentially, the semicolon is a cross between the two symbols—the period and the comma. It pulls together independent clauses like a comma, but it allows each to retain its individual strength, like a period. The semicolon is a staple of formal writing because it allows the writer to join thoughts with more sophistication than can be achieved using only the period and the comma.

Basic Rules for Using Semicolons Rule 1: Use the semicolon in place of a period to separate two sentences where the conjunction has been left out. Examples: Call me tomorrow; I will give you my answer then. I have paid my dues; therefore, I expect all the privileges listed in the contract.

Rule 2a: Use a semicolon between independent clauses linked with a transitional expression. Example: I learned all the rules and regulations; however, I never really learned to control the ball. 2b: Do not use a semicolon in front of words such as therefore and however if they do not connect two complete sentence or are used as interrupters. Incorrect Example: I would; therefore, like a response. Correct: I would, therefore, like a response.

More Rules…. Rule 3a: Use a comma or a semicolon before introductory words such as namely, that is, i.e., for example, e.g., or for stance when they are followed by a list of three or more items and preceded by a complete sentence. Example: You may be required to bring many items; e.g., sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing. OR You may be required to bring many item, e.g., sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing. (I.e. means that is; e.g. means for example.) Rule 3b: If these introductory words are followed by fewer than three items, simply enclose them in commas. Example: You may be required to bring many items, for instance, sleeping bags.

Rule 4: Use the semicolon to avoid confusion where commas already exist. 4a: Use the semicolon to separate units of a series when one or more of the units contain commas. Example: This conference has people that have come Boise, Idaho; Los Angeles, California; and Nashville, Tennessee. 4b: You may use a semicolon between two sentences that are joined by a conjunction but already have one or more commas within the first sentence. Example: If she can, she will attempt that feat; and if her husband is able, he will be there to see her.

, The comma My favorite animals are giraffes, dogs, cats, and birds. The comma is used to separate a list. My favorite animals are giraffes, dogs, cats, and birds. It is also used between the date and the year. It was December 24, 2001.

The colon is made with two periods. 11:35 pm It is used for time. It comes before a list. I will need the following items from the store: bananas, grapes, watermelon, and lemons.
