18.2. All living things need energy to survive Everything we do requires energy Organisms are divided into three groups based on how they get their energy.
A producer is an organism that gets its energy from the sun. Example: sunflower plant.
Decomposers are organisms that eat dead or decaying organisms. They carry out the natural process of decomposition. Fungi is the primary and most common.

The Farmer in the Dell Hi Ho, the Derri-o

The Farmer in the Dell

The Farmer takes the Wife

The Wife takes the Child

The Child takes the Nurse

The Nurse takes the Dog

The dog takes the cat

The Cat takes the Rat

The Rat takes the Cheese

The Cheese stands alone

What do you notice about the events of this song? Logical Order Dog is natural consumer of Cat Cat is natural consumer of Rat Rat is natural consumer of Cheese Cheese is not a consumer, it is a product

Food Chain a community of organisms where each member is eaten in turn by another member A logical order of producers eating consumers

What is a producer? Producers make their own food and provide food and shelter for animals. Examples: A tree is a producer that provides leaves for giraffes to eat (a leaf is a product like cheese)

What is a consumer? Anything that eats to get energy and nutrients from other organic substances. (Can’t make their own food) Ex: The giraffe is a consumer because he eats the leaves.

Are we a consumer? Of What?

Types of Consumers: Carnivores: Eat Meat! Herbivores: Eat Plants! Omnivores: Eat Both!

TIME TO MAKE A LIST! ProducersConsumers Omnivore:Carnivore:Herbivore: *Think of things on Noah’s Ark *

What is a Food Web? a community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains So…a large group of food chains put together

Food Chain vs. Food Web

Your Turn! With your group: make your own food web with at least 20 characters with logical food chains Label whether they are a consumer or producer or both If they are a consumer, label if they are: herbivore, omnivore, carnivore We will share them in about 10 minutes – You may name your characters if you Have time to at the end!!
