Sam Houston Early Life Birthdate – March 2 nd, 1793 Birthplace – Near Lexington, Virginia Childhood Information – Followed his father’s footsteps by joining the military; his valor in the War of 1812, in which he served under Andrew Jackson, earned him Jackson’s approval and praise. Education – While still a teenager, Sam ran off and lived among the Cherokee for a few years, learning their language and their ways. He never went to school until he was eight years old. Adulthood Wife – First got married to Eliza Allen on January 22 nd, 1829, then got divorced and got married to a Cherokee Indian woman named Tiana Rodgers in the summer of He then later got married to Margaret Moffette Lea on May 9 th, 1840, which they remained married for the remainder of Sam Houston’s lifetime. Children – Sam Houston had eight children, four boys and four girls. Career – Sam Houston was an American politician and soldier.

Sam Houston Role during the Texas Revolution Sam Houston was named the commanding general of the revolutionary army. In March 1836, Houston was a delegate to the convention that declared Texas an independent republic.
