Personal Statement  Required for all 2006 applicants.  Suggested topics include:   Student’s experience as an active citizen in school/community, & ways student will contribute to the MSU community.   Student’s experience combining academic and hands-on learning.   Obstacles student has encountered and how student has overcome them.   Student’s interest in an MSU education and how they plan to use it to make a difference in society.   Student’s experience promoting global understanding and/or the value of diversity.   Description of the student’s work ethic and accomplishments that illustrate that ethic.

Criminal Conduct Questions  Have you ever been expelled, suspended, disciplined or placed on probation by any secondary school or college you have attended because of academic dishonesty, financial impropriety, or an offense that harmed or had the potential to harm others?  Have you ever been convicted of a criminal offense (including in juvenile court) other than a minor traffic violation, or are there criminal charges pending against you at this time?

2006 Application Change ACT/SAT Writing Assessment  In March 2005, SAT required the writing assessment portion of the test; ACT offers a corresponding optional writing component.  Fall 2006 MSU applicants (current high school seniors) are required to submit the writing component for either standardized test.  Current juniors are strongly encouraged to take the ACT/SAT writing assessment portion.  Writing assessment requirement did not impact fall 2005 applicants.

Recruiting Transfer Students  Before we can complete an accurate credit evaluation we need a legible copy of every transcript from every post secondary institution the student has attended  Beginning in Fall 2006 MSU will NOT accept any transfer credits in courses with grades less than 2.0  All transfer students need to transfer to MSU with College Level English and College Level Math

Special Admit Process  The University Special Admit Process is utilized by the Office of Admissions when a student with “special talents or skills” is not regularly admissible to MSU.  The process can be utilized for student athletes; student musicians; student debaters; etc.

Special Admit Process for Student Athletes  1. Student is deemed “not regularly admissible” (low GPA and low test scores)  2. Andrea sends to Jen Smith, Jim Pignataro, Dr. June Youatt, Ron Mason, and coaches for specific sport indicating student is not regularly admissible with specific academic facts.  3. Coaches can add their support for Special Admit or can ask that “Special Admit” status not be requested (student is denied if this is the case)  4. If Special Admit status is granted Ron Mason and Dr. Youatt send an to Andrea Terry to proceed with admit.

What can the Office of Admissions do for Student Athletes and Coaches?  We will review transcripts and test scores prior to a Student Athlete visiting MSU  We will see any of your recruits during visits to campus  We can add your recruits to our database so the student athlete is on our mailing list and gets info from MSU often
