Southern Resentment Overall, the war and Reconstruction resulted in Southern Resentment and white Southern control of economic, political, and social conditions in the South. Robert E Lee urged the South to reunite with the nation.

“Act with malice towards none, with charity for all… to bind the nations wounds.”

The Impact of Lincoln’s Beliefs Secession is illegal; therefore Confederate governments in the South were illegitimate; therefore Southern states never actually left the Union. Reconstruction should quickly and fairly restore Southern governments, loyal to the Union.

Radical Reconstruction Lincoln was assassinated soon after Lee surrendered. Radical Republicans took control of Reconstruction and enacted harsh consequences for Southern states and began military occupation in the South.

The Civil War Amendments Radical Republicans worked to guarantee voting and citizenship rights for African Americans. 13 th Amendment: Slavery was abolished. 14 th Amendment: States cannot deny citizens equal rights under the law. 15 th Amendment: Voting rights are guaranteed regardless of “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

Reconstruction is Complete… In 1876, Rutherford B. Hayes became president after a controversial election. Republicans agreed to end military occupation of the South, if Southern Democrats supported Hayes… This is called The Compromise of 1877.
