Contract awarded by ONCHIT to the “Standards Harmonization Collaborative”, a consortium of 18 organizations led by ANSI, in cooperation with strategic partners including HIMSS, the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) and Booz Allen Hamilton. The Standards Harmonization Collaborative established the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP). The mission of HITSP is to “… serve as a cooperative partnership between the public and private sectors for the purpose of achieving a widely accepted and useful set of standards specifically to enable and support widespread interoperability among healthcare software applications, as they will interact in a local, regional and national health information network for the United States.” The Panel will “… assist in the development of the U.S. Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) by addressing issues such as privacy and security within a shared healthcare information system.” Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP)

The Panel is a multi-stakeholder coordinating body designed to provide the process within which affected parties can identify, select, and harmonize standards for communicating healthcare information throughout the healthcare spectrum The Panel facilitates the development of harmonized implementation profiles and information policies, including SDO work products (e.g. standards, technical reports). These policies, profiles and work products are essential for establishing privacy, security and interoperability among healthcare software applications. The panel is use-case driven, utilizing information from stakeholders and basing its decisions on industry needs. HITSP Structure – The Panel

Membership free and open to all interested organization in the following categories: Standards Development Organizations, including ANSI X12, HL7, NCPDP, IEEE, DiCOM, and others Non-Standard Development Organizations, including clinicians, providers, safety net providers, payers, public health, researchers, purchasers, national health IT organizations and vendors Government bodies, including federal, state and local Consumers Currently over 169 organizations participating Panel meets quarterly to review progress, make decisions HITSP Structure – The Panel

HITSP Board Established based on organization’s By-Laws and Contract Specifications Members elected from all major Standards Development Organizations (7), Clinicians (1), Providers (1), Payer (1), Public Health (1), Vendor (1), IT Organizations (1), Researchers (1), Safety Net Providers (1), Purchasers (1), Consumers (2), and Government (4) Organizes the work of the Panel into Coordinating Committees and Technical Committee Meets quarterly to review progress, recommend actions to the Panel HITSP Structure – The Board

Formed by Standards Harmonization Collaborative organizations Charged with developing, prototyping and evaluating a harmonization process for achieving a set of standards that are widely accepted and useful for interoperability Process must be use-case driven, pilot tested, and targeted to initial set of priority areas Process must be self-sustainable over time Staff support provided by ANSI Project Director, Program Manager, HITSP Secretariat HITSP Structure – The Project Team
