D.O. and Osteopathic Medicine  Doctor of Medicine (MD)  Typically referred to as “Allopathic Medicine”  Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)  Typically referred to as “Osteopathic Medicine”  DOs have the same practice rights as MDs  DOs practice in any and all specialties of medicine

Professional Opportunities  DOs can complete MD residencies  DOs/MDs participate in same professional organizations  DOs/MDs both treat Olympic athletes  DOs/MDs both work overseas  DOs/MDs both work at DO/MD medical schools

So What?  Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine  Osteopathic Philosophy

Some Basic Math What people think: MD + OMM = DO In reality: MD + OMM + Osteopathic Philosophy = DO MD + Osteopathic Philosophy = DO

History Lesson Where did Medicine Come From?

History of Medicine  19 th Century Heroic Medicine  Many forms of alternative healthcare  No “Evidence Based Medicine”  Little knowledge of Physiology and Anatomy  No Licensure  Poor education systems  One/two year schools  Apprenticeships

Osteopathy  A. T. Still, MD  Lost three kids to spinal meningitis  Medicine Is Stupid  He began to look at the relationship between structure and function

Osteopathy  Still began to develop techniques based on studies of anatomy  Osteopathic medicine is not about finding disease, but about allowing the body to find health  Still proposed the ideas of Osteopathy in 1874, two years prior to the development of the Germ Theory of Disease by Robert Koch.

Osteopathic Medicine in the 20 th century and beyond  Osteopathy becomes Osteopathic Medicine  DO’s were granted full practice rights in the U.S.  Now 74,000 DOs practice anywhere in any specialty.  60% practice in primary care – related to the Osteopathic Philosophy  1 in 5 medical students is in a DO Program  MSUCOM is the only school with both DO and MD tracks, where students take most of their classes together

So What’s the Difference? Treating Disease vs Treating Patients

Case Presentation  Mr. Davis is a 45 year old male presents with sudden onset of “the shakes” last night followed by a fever, cough, trouble breathing and chest pain  He has a past medical history of chronic lung disease from smoking since he was 8 years old.

Treating the person  Work?  Pt works as UPS driver  Recreation?  Pt training for marathon  Responsibility?  Pt takes care of his 2 year old son  Comorbidities?  Pt has chronic lung disease  Comfort?  Pt cannot sleep as well  Other Concerns?  Pts grandma died of pneumonia

Treating the person  UPS Driver  Advise time off from work  Marathon Training  Consider less intense work outs, get rest  Watching Son  Can patient get help?  Lung Disease  OMM to increase breathing  Discomfort  Medication for pain  Grandma’s History  Reassure patient he is healthier than his grandmother was.

Other concerns  Patient’s first visit to doctor  First time in hospital  First surgery  First emergency  Distressed family member of patient?

How do I become a DO? Osteopathic Medical School

Osteopathic vs Allopathic  Application Process  Curriculum  Board Exams  Residencies  Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine/Treatment (OMM or OMT)  400 hours of extra training DO students receive in hands on musculoskeletal treatment

Pre-Med Years  Get involved!  Pre-med vs non pre-med clubs  Volunteer work  Study hard  Learn material, pass your classes  Find your passion for medicine  Make it unique to you  Explore options  DO? PA? PT? Pharm.D? OT? RN?

What do I get involved in?  Find something you’re passionate about  Sewing club, math team,  Learn as much as you can about medicine  Budget time wisely  Learning how to manage time

Pre-SOMA  Student Osteopathic Medical Association  Pre-SOMA  Joining the osteopathic family  Pre-SOMA Liaisons  Involved in SOMA conventions  DO Day 3/14/12 – Pre-SOMA Scholarship  Pre-SOMA Events  Always making meetings across the US  Visit our website for upcoming events
