Nonfiction Elements and types of nonfiction.

Fiction or Nonfiction? Fiction – a story or narrative that is partially or fully invented by the author. Nonfiction – a story or narrative that is understood to be factual.

Elements of nonfiction Characters, plot and setting Purpose Tone

Types of nonfiction Autobiographies Biographies Diaries Essays Editorials Criticisms

Creative nonfiction? Not the same as semi-fiction – “based on a true story.” Non-fiction elements (real people and events) structured like a fictional narrative.

Prompt #1 - Autobiography There have been specific days, moments, or events in your life that have shaped you either positively or negatively. Write about what that moment was and how it changed you as a person. This can be as serious or as light as you want. Small changes can have a large impact! - Examples: meeting a best friend, learning a new skill, losing someone close, reading a book, discovering a new band or TV show, etc.

Prompt #2 - Persuasion Choose one movie or book (or restaurant, band, etc.) that you have recently seen or read that you either enjoyed or disliked. Write a letter to someone explaining why you feel the way that you do. Attempt to convince the letter recipient to feel the way you do. Important: you must have experienced what you are writing about! For example, you may not recommend or condemn the Twilight series if you have not read or watched the books/films.
