Portable IDS Design Issues and Tradeoffs Lee Alexander Intelligent Vehicles Lab University of Minnesota

Overview u Portable IDS - Features and Constraints u Design Options u One Proposed Design

Portable System Functionality u Mainline Sensors v Radar v Provide range, range rate, lane of travel, time to intersection for all vehicle within region of interest u Minor Road Sensors v Lidar based vehicle classification v Radar approach tracking u Crossroads Sensors v Laser scanners as opposed to cameras

Leveraging Existing IDS System u Software Directly Applicable v Sensor processing v Data acquisition u Hardware Directly Applicable v iDAQ computers v Main process computers v Archival Terraserver u Analysis Tools v Gap acceptance analysis tools v Near miss identification

Portable System Design Constraints u Safety u Local Codes and Regulations u Environmental Concerns (Noise) u Transportability u Ease of Installation u Security v Theft v Vandalism

Significant Design Issues u Sensor Mounting u Power distribution u Data transmission u Main Controller Cabinet/Workstation location

Sensor Mounting Options u DOT Supplied Signposts v Minimized shipping costs v Appears permanent, may deter theft/vandals v Stationary/stable v Requires commitment/effort from DOT u U of MN Supplied Tripods v Increases shipping costs (big, heavy, bulky) v Less than permanent, may attract thieves v Depending on ground conditions, stability might be an issue

System Power Options u Utility company power drop u Solar cells with battery storage u Generators running 24/7 u Intermittently running generators + battery storage

System Data Transfer u Wireless v Eliminates Ethernet cable laying on the ground v Bandwidth, range, reliability, local environmental effects u Wired v High reliability v Cabling, rodents, vandals, cost.

Laser Crossroad sensors u Pros v No need to get up high (no expensive, bulky masts, power line issues) v Lasers are less expensive than IR Cameras v Lasers are less sensitive to environmental conditions v Less data to store u Cons/Questions v Would states allow laser sensors in median? Place on breakaway mounts, located close to ground Possible (but unlikely) obstruction of sight lines in median.

Main Controller Trailer/Cabinet u Our Trailer vs. rented construction trailer v Standard office trailer - portable v Converted shipping container - more secure u Equipment v Office equipment v Data acquisition computers v 19” rack for electronic equipment v Power source

Security - Support u Security v Remote sensors 3# U channel looks official, secure Need to have means to secure power source  (channel pounded into ground) u Main Trailer v Locked/checked/armed with an alarm? u Local DOT Support v Refueling? Are states willing do to this? v Status Checks? v Security Visits?

Office Options

Questions for you u Local codes? u Noise restrictions? u How much help should we plan on from local DOT’s? v Signpost installation v Security v Fuel for generators u Have we missed anything important?
