Objective: What is the structure and function of DNA?

 Take the page and divide it into 6 equal boxes  Number the boxes Notes: DNA

 DNA = Deoxyribonucleic Acid  Code for your genes (traits)  DNA = nucleic acids = nucleotide

 Nucleotide = monomer that makes ups nucleic acids (DNA/RNA)  Made up of 3 parts  Phosphate group  Sugar  Nitrogen Base

 Double Helix  The sides of the DNA ladder are phosphate & sugar  Middle are the nitrogen bases:

 Replication – process by which DNA is duplicated before a cell divides.  Semi-conservative: when DNA is copied its made up of one new and one old strand

 There are 4 nitrogen bases:  Adenine (A) Thymine (T)  Guanine (G) Cytosine (C)  Practice: write the complementary DNA strand A T A T C A T G C A T A T C A T G C T A T A G T A C G T A T A G T A C G

Focus Question: What is the structure and function of DNA?  Write down 2 things you learned today that answers the focus question (be specific, complete sentences)  Write down 1 question you still have about today’s focus.
