North Carolina Read To Achieve Information for Parents of 4 rd grade students that received a retained reading label in Davidson County Schools

My Student Didn’t Pass the 3 rd grade Read to achieve Standards…Now What?  The Principal may chose to retain your student in 3 rd grade if they demonstrated deficiencies in multiple content areas. Your student will receive targeted interventions to increase their reading and other academic proficiencies. In addition they will be pulled out every day for an intense 90 minute uninterrupted reading block.  Your student will be placed in a 4 th grade class with a retained reading label. Your student will be pulled out every day for an intense 90 minute uninterrupted reading block OR

Retention Flow Chart  Students with a retained reading label are given an opportunity for full promotion to 4 th grade by  passing the 3 rd grade Read to Achieve Assessment (November 1 st )  Achieving a level P or higher on their mCLASS TRC reading level at the beginning, middle or end-of- year check points  passing a 3 rd grade local benchmark assessment with a 70% or higher.

Retention Flow Chart cont…  Students that still have the retained reading label at the end of their 4 th grade year are given an opportunity for full promotion to 5 th grade by  Achieving a level 3 or higher on the 4 th grade Reading EOG  Students with the retained label that do not meet any of the requirements for promotion to 4 th or 5 th grade by the end-of-year shall be handled by the Principal on a case-by-case basis, but shall continue to receive intensive reading supports until grade level proficiency is demonstrated.

What can you do?  Read with your child. Before bedtime is great, but anytime is a good time for reading  Be sure to read books that your child enjoys. Children that don’t like to read usually are not reading books about things they enjoy or find interesting.  Read books that are either on their level or one level above your child's teacher can assist you with identifying the proper reading level.  Ask your child questions about what they are reading  Model behavior – if your child never sees you read then they may not see it as a priority. Lead and inspire your child by example.
