Reading in Literary Non- Fiction Making choices about food that affect more than our waistlines

Even though the price of groceries has sky-rocketed and people all around the world are dying from starvation each day, Americans still throw away 30 million tons of food each year. After reading articles, book excerpts, watching video clips and viewing a photo essay on food, write a narrative account from the point of view of someone outside the United States that shows what you’ve learned about this global problem.

Essential Questions What can individuals do to change the way we think about food and waste? Why is America the fattest nation on the planet? How can we be more healthy? Is our addiction to fast food too much for us to overcome as a nation?

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats - Peter Menzel Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio traveled the world documenting that most basic of human behaviors — what we eat. Their project, “Hungry Planet,” depicts everything that an average family consumes in a given week–and what it costs — laid out in thought-provoking detail. Their results will be exhibited by The Nobel Peace Center to give viewers a peek into kitchens from Norway to Kuwait, and to raise awareness about how environments and cultures influence the cost and calories of the world’s dinners.
