What are the issues involved in buying flowers from LEDCs for Valentines?

By the end of the lesson: All pupils understand what a ‘geographical investigation’ is. All pupils understand the key question they are studying All pupils plan their investigation Most pupils begin to gather secondary evidence

Question What are the issues involved in buying flowers from LEDCs for Valentine’s Day?

How should I structure my investigation? It is important that you present a well organized report and the follow this structure; Location of study/background information Investigation question Issues that arise from the investigation Research/data collected – evaluation of data and effects of the question investigated Conclusion (including future scenarios)

Look at the examples What questions do you need to ask in order to answer the question? Look at the examples provided to help with your questions

In your work you should include: Information based on maps, tables, annotated diagrams and photographs (these do not count in your 800 word limit) What maps, graphs or diagrams do you think you could use?

You should: Use information and ideas from books, magazines, newspapers and websites. However, it is important you do not copy or make use of anyone else’s work without acknowledging where it comes from. You must provide references to show where it comes from; in the same way, if you want to quote what someone has said you must make it clear it is a quotation, credit the author and give reference in a list at the end of your work.

ICT You are encouraged to use IT for this task You should use the internet to research information and you may want to take digital photographs or videos you find. (Make sure you reference them). You should also use IT to write your report up. It can be a leaflet, poster, power point etc.

Top tips Use a variety of scales if appropriate (Global, National, local). Organize your ideas into clear sections so your report is well structured Use initiative in your research and acknowledge all your sources Consider a variety of viewpoints from different groups of people. Have a clear conclusion, which answers the investigation question and justify it If you are writing a report, keep within the word limit and be careful about spelling, punctuation and grammar Know the mark scheme that your teacher will use before you start writing

These questions are to guide you only! Location/Background Which countries are involved? Which trade blocs, if any, are involved? What are their defining characteristics? Investigation Question What are the historic causes of the relationship? What does each country gain from the relationship? What is the nature of the trade? How do global circumstances affect the relationship? Effects/Evaluation What are the effects on each of the countries involved? How are these primary effects changing the lives of the various people in each country? Which effects of the trade relationship are unsustainable? Are there differing opinions about the topic investigated and can you identify these stakeholders and their views? Conclusion What could be done to maximise the benefits for the people of each country involved? How could the trade be made more sustainable? How might the relationship develop in the future?

Mark scheme Have a look at the mark scheme Use this to help you plan your investigation
