Senecan and Revenge Tragedy AJ Soutter Erica Jones

Senecan Tragedy Dramas written mostly by Seneca the Younger, a roman stoic philosopher and politician in the first century A.D. Rediscovered in the sixteenth century, they influenced both Neoclassical tragedy and Elizabethan tragedy. The plays put heavy emphasis on supernatural elements.

Examples of Senecan Tragedy The Madness of Hercules The Trojan Women Octavia Oedipus (rewritten by Seneca)

Revenge Tragedy Based upon Senecan Tragedies, these dramas are filled with gruesome and morbidly comic violence. They usually incorporate secret murder, ghosts, an interval where enemies plot against each other, madness, and catastrophe which kills everyone. The violence is often graphically spelt out.

Examples of Revenge Tragedy The most famous is probably Shakespeare's Hamlet, the plot of which the movie The Lion King is based on. The Spanish Tragedy is also a famous play, written by Thomas Kyd.
