Technical Drawings and their elements Applications of Technology

What is sketching? Sketching is freehand drawing without the aid of drawing instruments. What is a technical drawing? A technical drawing is a precise drawing of an object (ex: a building) with the aid of drawing instruments (ex: T- squares, triangles, computers).

Dimensions: the measurements of an object (length, width, or height) Dimension lines: the system of lines on a technical drawing that indicate the distances between objects

Dimensions are normally centered above the dimension line Dimension lines normally end with Arrows Dots Tick marks Slashes Extension lines are lines that extend past a dimension and connects them to an object on a technical drawing.

Drawings may include objects that have been poch  d (a heavy black hatching or fill) to make an object stand out. Usually the heaviest lines on a drawing, object lines show the edges of an object. Drawings may include notes to provide more information. A set of prints or plans may have a legend on the first sheet to explain all symbols used in a drawing or map.

 north arrow is a symbol on a map that shows which direction is north This symbol is not necessarily the shape of an arrow. A Graphic scale is a visual representatio n of the scale used to measure or create a drawing. Scale may be defined three ways. You will learn more about this in Chapter 3.

 title block is a chart located along the bottom or right-hand side of a technical drawing with information about the building and the people responsible for drawing, designing, and building the project. Sheet numbers are part of the title block and used to organize drawings. A Stands for Architectural C Stands for Civil E Stands for Electrical M Stands for Mechanical P Stands for Plumbing S Stands for Structural
