SIMPLIFYING FRACTIONS You can simplify a fraction by dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same whole number (a common factor).

EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS Fractions that have the same value. Ex: ½ = 2/4

MIXED NUMBERS Mixed numbers have a whole number AND a fraction. Ex: 2 ½ Mixed numbers represent numbers greater than 1.

IMPROPER FRACTIONS Improper fractions have a numerator that is greater than the denominator. Improper fractions represent numbers greater than 1. Ex: 8/5

SWITCHING BETWEEN THE TWO To change an improper fraction into a mixed number: DIVIDE. To change a mixed number into an improper fraction: Use the circle trick. Ex: 2 ¾  2 x 4 + 3= 11. Keep denominator  11/4
