Vocabulary Mixed Number The sum of a whole number and a fraction less than 1. Improper Fraction A fraction with a numerator that is greater than or equal to its denominator.

Rewriting Mixed Numbers as Improper Fractions 1.Multiply the whole number by the denominator. 2.Add the numerator to the product. 3.Write this number as the numerator and keep the original denominator as the denominator of the improper fraction.

Example 1 Write as an improper fraction. Multiply the whole number by the5(6) = 30 denominator. Add the numerator to the product = 31 Write the improper fraction as the total over the original denominator.

Relay Working with a partner, determine who is the Coach and who is the Mathlete for the first card. The Mathlete should have the writing utensil. Following your roles, complete the first card. When finished bring up the card to the scorer. If you are correct (and followed Precision Police guidelines), you will receive the next relay card. Hand off the card to your partner and switch roles. If you are incorrect, the scorer will give you a hint on what you did incorrectly. Return to your coach and continue to work. Bring up the card when ready.

Rewriting Improper Fractions as Mixed Numbers 1.Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number in the mixed number. 2.Write the remainder as the numerator over the original denominator. This is the fraction in the mixed number.
