South America I

South America Learning Objectives :- Describe South America List the climatic characteristics Describe landforms

South America Great variety of tourist attractions Attracts less than 5% of world tourists Average only 4.2 days Magnificent scenery, outstanding beaches, excellent skiing, picturesque towns, cities of great cultural diversity and archaeological sites as impressive as any in the world

South America Several factors that account for South America’s failure to attract tourists :- 1)Largely underdeveloped 2)Far from the main tourist-generating countries of the world 3)Number of countries that are both closer to Canada and the US and less expensive to visit than South America

South America 4)Many perceive the service in South America as poor and many areas as unsafe

Landforms 3 mountain or plateau regions :- 1)Cordillera of the Andes 2)Plateaus of Brazil and Guiana 3)The River Lowlands

The Cordillera of the Andes Greatest mountain chains in the world Stretching from Venezuela to the southernmost regions of the Argentina and Chile 3 active volcano groups - in southern Colombia and Ecuador, middle and southern Peru

Plateaus of Brazil and Guiana Dominated by old, crystalline plateaus that have been elevated and then eroded Irregular, making transportation difficult Still sufficient to modify the tropical climate, making them more attractive to human settlement Southern Brazil, lava flow, more resistant to erosion

River Lowlands Large river systems drain eastward to the Atlantic e.g. Amazon basin in northern Brazil, Parana in south Brazil

Climatic Patterns Diverse and complex Tropical nature of the continent Extends across the Amazon Basin Characterized by high temperatures throughout the year, with only the subtropical climates are located in the southern portions of Brazil and in Argentina

Division of South American Tourism 3 distinct physical and cultural regions that influence tourism: the Andes countries, including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile; the middle-latitude countries of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay; and Brazil which by its size and cultural distinctiveness is a region by itself

The Andes Countries Most important tourist regions in South America because of their unique historical and cultural attachments Indian and mestizo (mixed Indian and European ancestry) are in the high attitudes, European pollutions in moderate valleys

The Andes Countries Predominantly Indian populations, concentrated mostly in the highlands and engaged in farming Richest country of the Andes is Venezuela

Summary South America has enormous attractions to offer to current and potential visitors Generally, most of the countries in South America continent are located in the mountainous regions. It has also shown the different divisions of South American
