A look at Unit Topics : Unit 8 “Ethics” Unit 9 “Your Career” Unit 10 “Wrap up” All grades will be posted a few days after unit 10 is complete.

What is Ethics? Every field has a code of ethics that governs how its professionals will behave in a range of situations. In Unit 8, we will explore the ethical code(s) that govern professionals in the field early childhood development. It is critical that you start you career in the field with this knowledge in hand! 10

Why should we explore the code of ethics?

Objectives After completing this unit, you should be able to: Identify which ethical codes govern professionals who work in the field of early childhood development Explain the main reasons why ethical codes are important Course outcomes practiced in this unit: Identify early childhood professional roles, responsibilities, and standards 12

On the Discussion Board… Imagine yourself in the following case scenario: You are the teacher of a 5-year-old whose parents are going through a very controversial divorce. The mother has been a model parent and always helps out in your class. She seems very loving and concerned. The father often comes into school raging and complaining. He talks in a harsh manner with you and his child. You have been asked by the child's mother to testify on her behalf in a child custody hearing. The issue: Do you agree to testify? Do you take the side of one parent over another in a conflict OR do you remain neutral? Response: You agree to testify. It's obvious that the mother will be a better parent. Evaluate whether or not you acted ethically. Mention and explore at least three aspects of the Code of Ethical Conduct in your response.

Readings: The Code of Ethics This week you will be introduced to the Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment, which you can be sure to refer to several times in your degree program and career as an early childhood development professional. Our reading is one Web Resource, which can be found under the Unit 8 home reading tab.

Ethics Ethics. The study of right and wrong, or duty and obligation, that involves critical reflection on morality and the ability to make choices between values and the examination of the moral dimensions of relationships. Ethics and the early childhood educator: Using the NAEYC code. Washington, DC: NAEYC.

Making Decisions

Scenario You are a toddler teacher. One student's mother comes to pick up her child and drive him home. From her slurred speech and clumsy movements, you suspect that she has been drinking heavily after work. 17

Lets Share The issue: Do you refuse to let the parent take the child and ask her to call someone else to drive OR do you let her drive the child home? Response: You decide to ignore it this time, because you're not sure that she's really drunk. Is this correct? What would you do? 18

NAEYC Code of Ethics P-1.11—When we become aware of a practice or situation that endangers the health, safety, or well-being of children, we have an ethical responsibility to protect children or inform parents and/or others who can

Scenario You teach in a school that has a population from a culture in which physical punishment is common. This morning a girl from this cultural group strikes another child. A new aide who shares the child's culture grabs him and twists his ear. The child is momentarily stunned but soon is fine and seems calm the rest of the day. Apart from some redness, there are no other effects. When you speak with the aide, she tells you children in her community are used to this discipline. She says, "It calmed him down, didn't it?" 20

Lets Share The issue: Do you tell the aide that physical punishment is not acceptable in your class OR do you let it go? Response: You let it go because she knows the culture better than you do. Is this correct? What would you do? 21
