UNIT 5 LESSON 6
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO… Discuss basic elements of colonialism and imperialism.
WE'RE LOOKING AT HISTORY AP Assumes that you’ve had World History and/or U.S. History Colonialism and Imperialism are pivotal points of history Colonialism and Imperialism are often used interchangeably, but they are different. Both mean political & economic domination Colonialism implies conquering and ruling, the key difference is setting up a government and importing its own people. North America, India, & Australia are examples SETTING UP GOVERNMENT & Periment settlements important difference
IN CONTRAST, IMPERIALISM… Imperialism is a broader term Imperialism is an idea, whereas colonialism is a practice Individual pursuits only Imperialism derives from the Latin “to command”. Focus is on exercising control over an area; especially economic. Maybe done by a government, or a company, i.e.; East India Company. BOTH Colonialism & Imperialism are about economic gains
BETWEEN 1450’S TO 1750’S COLONIALISM European countries; England, France, Portugal, Dutch, and Spain sought to expand their markets Mercantilism: Economic theory that trade generates wealth Europeans spread out to North & South America, India, Australia, and New Zealand. Generated a significant amount of wealth through trading with their own colonies Colonialism was often for, “gold, God, and glory.” Not uncommon to set-up plantations
1750’S ONWARD…A BIT MORE IMPERIALISTIC. Industrial revolution really drove need for raw materials Wealth generated in earlier centuries helped to finance continued expansion of territories Focused a bit more on resource acquisition China region, Indochina (Present day Vietnam), and portions of Africa are engaged in imperialism Not uncommon for a private company to spearhead resource acquisition No regulations
THE SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA (NEO-IMPERIALISM) Prior to 1880’s, Europeans were in Africa, but private traders focused on exploiting it Slave trade Post-1880’s sees a second push for Imperialism throughout the world, Japan, Belgium, and U.S. are included 1884 Berlin Conference European powers of Belgian, British, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish divide up the area Cared about raw materials, trade profits, and naval/military bases Little or no capital investment in these regions
WE’RE GOING TO WATCH A VIDEO… Video is going to take two days to watch, today and part of tomorrow. This isn’t free time; you need to take notes because I will let you use those notes for Thursday’s clicker check grade. I’ll also collect the notes; don’t focus on every detail, but pay attention to concepts that you’ve learned/heard about in any of your Units The video isn’t specific to imperialism or colonialism, but looks at it holistically in Africa Remember that colonialism underscores a lot of diffusion Colonialism is important in all of our units, but it plays a role in explaining crops and what is grown where and how.
