Objectives Learn about Title IX, in particular sexual misconduct, relationship violence and stalking Understand your obligations as a Responsible Employee, including reporting requirements Learn how to talk with a student who reports to you Become familiar with resources available to students
Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex (including sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other forms of sexual misconduct) Violence Against Women Act (also called VAWA and Campus SaVE Act) (amendment to Clery Act) provides certain notification and procedural rights to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking The Law
Code of Student Responsibility Sexual harassment = unwelcome, gender-based verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that is based on a power differential Sexual assault = sexual act (intercourse or oral sex) or sexual contact (touching of intimate parts) without consent Sexual exhibitionism = engaging in sex or exposing one’s intimate parts (buttocks, genitalia, groin, breast (unless breastfeeding)) in the presence of others. Sexual exploitation = (e.g. non-consensual explicit photographs, prostituting someone, voyeurism) Stalking = two or more acts directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to (a) fear for his or her safety or (b) suffer substantial emotional distress Relationship violence = dating violence or domestic violence

Responsible Employee = an employee that must report incidents of sexual misconduct, relationship violence and stalking involving at least one student to the Title IX Coordinator This includes off-campus activity All faculty members at UNC Charlotte are responsible employees Title IX
Responsible Employee = all Cabinet members all faculty members Police & Public Safety Human Resources Dean of Students office Coaches, trainers Housing staff, RAs, RCs security personnel Teaching Assistants certain PaTS staff Staff with supervisory responsibilities Title IX
How do you respond to the student who reports to you? Be empathetic Listen and support Find out facts about the incident, including names of those involved, and make notes if necessary Let the student know that you will need to report the incident because the University is required to investigate all reports of sexual assault, relationship violence and/or stalking Let the student know that he/she will continue to have choices in the way their information is handled even though you have to report Talk to the student about resources available to them like the Counseling Center, Center for Wellness Promotion, Student Health Center, Dean of Students Office Go with the student to a resource on campus Give the student a copy of the Interpersonal Violence Resource Guide
