Use the ACE strategy to ace any question!

Today’s Lesson Objective: Students will identify the essential parts of the ACE thinking strategy. Students will apply “A” by answering questions in complete sentences verbally and in writing. We will: Define each part of the strategy. Practice responding to questions in complete sentences together. Practice writing complete sentence answers to everyday questions.

Answering questions is hard! Whether they’re out loud, multiple choice, or written response, answering questions can be hard to do! ACE is a strategy to help you think things through.

ACE is an acronym. Each beginning letter has meaning. A= answer the question C= confirm your answer with evidence E= explain your thinking

Let’s Talk about A- “Answer the Question.” The first step in answering questions is understanding what’s being asked. To make sure we answer the right question, we restate the question in answer form (sometimes on the paper, sometimes out loud, and sometimes in your mind). We’re going to learn exactly how to do this!

C- “Confirm your answer with evidence.” The word “confirm” means to prove it, or to check to make sure it’s true. When talking in class, use evidence from what your teacher has said, from your notes, or from text. When taking a test, use evidence from the text, and when there’s not a text, use evidence from your knowledge!

E- “Explain your thinking.” You’ve answered, you’ve given proof, now it’s time to use your own words to explain how your proof backs up your answer. You’re connecting the two and making sure you’re thoughts are clear. Sometimes you can explain by adding more text details too.

It’s important to ACE your answers- all the time! *When we restate the question, we make sure we answer the right question. *When we speak in complete sentences, we know we are being clear. We’re going to use a hand signal to remind each other to ACE our answers in class. We’re going to do a cheer when classmates ACE their answers in class.

Let me show you how I ACE my answers. Question: “What’s tomorrow’s date?” Answer: Question: “How many school days are there until vacation?”

Let’s ACE some answers together! Question: “How many students are in this class?” Answer: Question: “Who is your P.E. teacher?” Partner activity: Let’s try some with our partners. Is it sunny or cloudy outside right now? How many brothers and sisters do you have?
