O UR M ISSION The Office of University Relations communicates: goals, objectives priorities to various external and internal constituencies The office promotes information about faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends, research, scholarship, activities and community outreach. Beginning with a broad communications plan is your most effective way to communicate your message. University Relations can help you develop your communication goals, create the message, conduct research, develop a timeline and determine the right communications tools—print, Web, traditional media, social media, video, multimedia and more.

S PEECHWRITING FOR THE C HANCELLOR Basic Necessities for a Speech Date, time and location of speech Length of speaking time (such as 1-2 minutes, 3-5 minutes, 5 or more minutes) Type of speech (i.e., welcome remarks, closing remarks, keynote, other) Type of audience students and families alumni and friends faculty and staff board members and other volunteers local organizations elected and appointed officials business leaders a combination of several types of audience members Approximate size of the audience (for example: small group discussion setting or large auditorium)

S PEECHWRITING FOR THE C HANCELLOR Additional helpful information Which key messages do you think the speech should convey? UNCW’s key messages include: Emphasis on the journey of learning for students and the connections that students form with faculty and staff Emphasis on a “sense of place” and the university’s commitment to Southeastern North Carolina Community partnerships of many types and their value to both the university and the community Innovation and entrepreneurship and how efforts under these two umbrellas benefit the university and the community Are there special audience members who should be recognized during the speech or key announcements/facts that should be included in the speech? What do you hope the speech will accomplish? Encourage more support for your program/UNCW Encourage more participation/involvement by your audience Inform your audience about the university Serve as a specific call to action – if yes, then what action do you want the audience to take? About deadlines The Chancellor prefers to receive speeches and bullet points 5-7 days before events. Please submit speech requests as soon as possible to expedite preparation of remarks.
