What is the redesign? Multi-year project to completely redesign EMIS for Ohio schools Modified vertical reporting structure Changes in how data gets from NWOCA to ODE Current: Flat files submitted to ODE Future: XML-based structure built upon SIF 5

What is SIF? More information at SIF = Schools Interoperability Framework SIF enables diverse applications to interact and share data related to entities in the pK-12 instructional and administrative environment. 6

SIF consists of… Software Application (i.e. eSIS): Software program implemented within a school or district SIF Data Object: Sets of information shared by software applications using the rules of the SIF Specification SIF Agent: A software program (written by a vendor) that serves as the intermediary between the software application and the SIF Zone ZIS (Zone Integration Server): A software program that serves as the central communications point in a SIF Zone 7

What does this mean to you? NWOCA is a pilot for the EMIS Redesign Pilot testing to begin December 2008 What does this mean next year? Districts will likely see very little direct interaction with the SIF pilot. Aggregations and submissions will still be processed in the same manner next year Districts WILL start to see changes in the EMIS files and data structures. 11

What will be changing? See FY09 EMIS Manual – Appendix Y for more details Three new record types Student Standing (FS) Student Attributes- Effective Date (FD) Student Attributes- No Date (FN) Smaller Student Demographic (GI) No more Student Attendance (GK) 12

Effective Dates Present on FS and FD records Provide continuous values for elements where needed by ODE New record when values change Open versus Closed record Report first day of school to end of reporting period- cumulative for year Example improvements: OE funding, yearend attendance 13

Student Standing (FS) Relationship of student to district Attending and Assigned Building How Received (Student Status) Sent Reason (A/H Indicator) x 2 Received and Sent IRNs 14

Student Standing (FS) Tuition Type Attendance Counts x 3 Effective Dates Multiple SSIDs (rare) Percent of Time split Admission/Withdrawal date/reason 15

More Changes…. The addition of the FS, FD, and FN records will be the biggest changes (along with the adjustments to the existing GI record). More information to come as it becomes available. 16
