PP What Happened to Roanoke? The English colony of Roanoke and the men who bravely tried to make a settlement on the east coast of North American continent did not survive in the colony because the amount of supplies were scarce and the Croatoan Indians took the colonists to the Croatoan Island to help them live in this new environment. Most importantly, from the relevant information about Roanoke mentioned, in 1719 white hunters said they found Indians that were light skinned, had blue eyes and had some of the same family names as the Roanoke colonists. This shows that, the colonists adapted to the Indian ways and stayed to live among the Natives, comfortably. Also, the colonists became knowledgeable about how to live in that part of the world and became close with the tribe, they intermarried and had children. In addition, the background information stated, that John White came back after three years to find artifacts, such as broken pieces of armor and trees burning in a fire pit that the colonists left at the site of the settlement and he found the messages of CROATOAN and CRO. In fact, these were a sign that the English men were in no danger from the Natives, the colonists moved locations because they had little to eat. Truly, the Natives taught the colonists how to understand their peaceful ways of life with out using armor to kill for food. All in all, the Roanoke colonists moved to another place in the area, adapted to this new location and learned the new ways of surviving on the North American continent from the local Natives. John White should have searched multiple locations instead of giving up so quickly and assuming the colonists didn’t survive at all.
