What makes ALEKS Unique? Artificial Intelligence accurately assesses and targets gaps in individual student knowledge Students work at their own pace on a Highly- Individualized Learning Path based on what they are Ready to Learn Automated Reporting helps teachers focus instruction and monitor progress Unlimited Online Access – PC and Mac Compatible QuickTables builds knowledge of basic math facts

Why are we Using ALEKS? Differentiate instruction and provide each student an opportunity to reach his/her fullest potential Track student progress and accountability Create student awareness of strengths and weaknesses Maintain mastery of concepts over time

A quick ALEKS walk-through…

ALEKS administers a personalized, interactive assessment that includes approximately 25 to 30 questions. The student should do his/her best work without assistance. The student’s individualized learning plan will be based on the results of the assessment.

It is important that students make an honest attempt on this and all other assessments so ALEKS can accurately update what they know and what they are ready to learn.

Following the initial assessment, the student receives a pie chart Following the initial assessment, the student receives a pie chart. In the "pie," each "slice" corresponds to a particular area of the course, such as "geometry" or "functions and graphs". The degree to which each slice is filled by darker color shows the extent to which the student has mastered that area. Each slice of the pie may be opened to produce a list of concepts on which the student can choose to work.

By clicking on any of the items suggested in the pie chart, the student makes an immediate transition into Learning Mode. Learning Mode provides practice problems and offers explanations of concepts and procedures.

In Learning Mode, the student is presented with problems. If you know how to solve a problem, enter the answer and click Next. If you do not know how to solve a particular problem, you may click on the Explain button for help.

Clicking on Explain will allow you to view a step-by-step explanation of that specific problem.

Additional explanations and tips/tricks may be available to foster exploration and understanding. Additional explanations and tips may be available to foster further exploration and understanding.

Once the student is able to correctly answer a specified number of problems in a row without any help (i.e. without clicking on Explain), that topic will be filled in on the pie.

Students will then return to their pie to pick a new topic to master. Important Note: Having topics added to the pie is not permanent! If a student fails to show mastery of a given topic on a future Assessment, it will be removed from the pie and they will need to return to the Learning Mode to practice additional problems to have it filled back in on their pie. ALEKS is a cycle of assessment and learning. Note: Students will be reassessed periodically to ensure retention. Topics will be reassigned in Learning Mode if the student does not remember how to do them during an assessment.

Using ALEKS at Home ALEKS can be used at home or anywhere with a computer and Internet connection Your child simply needs to log in to the program at www.aleks.com using the assigned login name and password To monitor your child’s progress in ALEKS, please ask him/her to log in to the program and click on the Reports link in the upper right corner

Getting the Most from ALEKS Encourage your child to spend extra time in ALEKS whenever possible. If your child needs help, encourage him/her to use the Explain button or other approved resources. (It is important that students do their own work in ALEKS.) Talk with your child about his/her work in ALEKS. What are the daily/weekly goals? Have your child show you how he/she uses the reports to track progress.
