Scotland Geography&Landscapes

Scotland identity Scotland is located in northern Europe and is of 78’789 km² wide. The coastline is of 12’000 km long. It’s one of the three historical provinces of Great Britain with Wales and England. The Northwest Channel separates south western Scotland from Northern Ireland. The northwest coast faces the Atlantic Ocean. East faces the North Sea, which separates Scotland from the mainland of Europe. The river Tweed and the Cheviot Hills form Scotland’s southern border with England.

Geography The 3 major parts are: the Highlands, the Lowlands and the Southern Uplands. Scotland varies in higher; from lowlands to uplands and from big cities to lost islands. Apart form the mainland, Scotland consists of over 760 islands. The valleys of the Rivers Clyde, Fourth, and Tay cross the Central Lowlands. This region has Scotland’s best farmland. About three-fourths of Scottish people live in the lowlands!

Geography The country’s capital and second largest city is Edinburgh, with 435’000 inhabitants. But the first largest city is Glasgow (the Greater Glasgow contains 41% of the Scotland population!). The most populated island is called “Lewis and Harris”, and about 19’918 inhabitants live on it! Normally the major part of Scottish islands are uninhabited… River Tay is the longest river of Scotland with 193 km in the Highlands and the 6st of Great Britain!

Famous hills Scotland’s landscape counts about a million of hills! But in fact these are not so high, they aren’t mountains. The three highest hills are: Ben Nevis: 1344 meters Ben Macdhui: 1310 meters Braeriach: 1296 meters The highest altitude of an island is: Skye: 993 meters

Scottish climate The climate is temperate and oceanic, due to the fact that the country is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest.
