Oregon’s Future Starts Here Superintendents’ vision for turning our good schools into great schools

Who created this vision? Oregon’s school superintendents In partnership with:

Here’s What We Need Rigorous Academic Standards for All Students from Pre-School through Graduate School Effective Teaching Systems to Support All Students in Meeting High Standards

Rigorous Academic Standards New ‘Common Core’ state standards Rigorous graduation requirements Next generation of assessments

Effective Teaching Quality of teacher and effectiveness of principal are critical Educators need resources to update their skills and knowledge, including: – High-quality professional development – Useful evaluations – Support early in years – Opportunities for leadership, advancement

Systems to Support All Students We can close the achievement gap and improve outcomes for at-risk students A key is additional, high-quality instruction time, such as: – Summer school – Before/after school programs – Targeted, in-school instruction

Here’s How We’ll Get There Strong Leadership and Effective Governance Stable and Adequate Funding Parents and Communities as Partners

Strong Leadership, Governance A proven education leader as state superintendent of public instruction An aligned state education governance structure, from pre-school through grad school A state accountability system that brings focus and clarity to school performance

Stable and Adequate Funding Stable and adequate funding, sufficient for schools to: – Provide high-quality education for students to meet high standards – Offer additional instruction for students who need it – Ensure a full school year In turn, schools must achieve return on investment

Parents, Communities as Partners Educating the next generation is everyone’s responsibility: – Parents – Teachers – Students – Superintendents and Principals – School classified employees – Governor and Legislature – Community members

Where We Go From Here Higher standards adopted by State Board P-20 ‘Oregon Education Investment Team’ established by Governor Governor, legislature considering change in state superintendent selection process Legislature considering bills to support effective teaching: performance evaluation, mentoring Governor, legislature debating declining education budget
