WELCOME BACK! PSYCHOLOGY 12

ABOUT ME MRS. VANGELISTA I have been teaching for 11 years! I’m old! Many of you I taught when you were in Grade 8/9! Now you are in grade 11/12! It’s going to be a great year. I think I still have some of those Fall of Rome Recipes (Haha) Some of my favorite things are: travelling, eating pasta, pizza and gelato (who doesn’t like doing that _can you guess my heritage? ), listening to loud music and singing along with it, playing with my kids on the trampoline, running, spending time with friends, reading cool articles about Psychology, watching movies…. I have a long list but I will stop there! I am here at lunch for extra help with your course or send an . I have an awesome website (at least I think its pretty cool) I WANT TO BE IN THIS CLASS

OPENING DAY ACTIVITY: PERSONALITY TEST THE “PIG” PERSONALITY TEST Give each member of the group paper/pen. Allow 5 minutes to draw a pig. Team Building Activity: Spot it! Each student will get 1 spot it card. Your task is to find a match. When you have a match find something that you both have in common (for example, we both love pepperoni pizza, favorite TV show is big bang theory). Do this 3 times (you will meet 3 different people). Remember to introduce yourself and have a conversation! Then move on to find another match! Hang on to your card and return it to me when you are done OR Mr. Wright!

COURSE OUTLINE Welcome to Psychology 12! This is a course on human behaviour and basic concepts in modern psychology. The course is designed for students who have an interest in psychology and want an introduction to some of the key topics studied in this field. This is also a course for those who are curious to learn how and why people think and act the way they do! Let’s face it… human beings are fascinated by each other. Just think about how much time we spend watching other people’s behaviour. We watch people on TV, in the movies, online/social networks (Facebook, Instagram & Twitter!), and in our daily lives. We buy trashy magazines like “People” and “”Star” and watch Reality Television (The Bachelor!) because we are curious about how people will act and what they will do. Psychologists are interested in behaviour as well as the mental processes, thoughts, ideas, and understandings behind them. Psychologists ask questions such as: What are the reasons behind our actions? Does my brain control me, or do I control it? How much of “me” was determined genetically at birth, and how much was acquired by experience and learning? What motivates us to do certain things and not do others? How do we learn and develop language from infancy? How to we sense the world and what is our brain perceiving? Is there such as thing as ESP? What causes Depression and Anxiety? What is Abnormal Psychology and how do we treat ‘abnormal’ behaviour?

EVALUATION There is no final exam for this course. Assignments, Projects, Presentations 40% Tests & Quizzes 30% In-class work, homework, participation 30%

ASSIGNMENTS You will complete and be marked on a variety of things: Homework Paragraphs and short assignments Reports Oral Presentations AND projects Quizzes Tests List goes on…. Make sure you are up to date with readings and notes! We take a lot of notes!

CLASS BLOG Go to: Mrsvangelista.com Here you will find out what’s happening in class Your assignments will also be posted here.

EXPECTATIONS - ATTENDANCE What we cover in class is important – do not miss things if you can help it. If you are away: Call the school to let us know why you are away. Go to the blogsite to see what you missed Bring a note for the school and a note for me. Expect to make up what you missed.

EXPECTATIONS - PUNCTUALITY You expect me to be here on time and ready to go. I expect the same of you. Surprise quizzes and homework checks happen at the start of class. If you are late you may be given a zero. If you do arrive late, come in without disturbing the class. Wait until you can enter without disturbing the class. Make sure I know you have arrived.

EXPECTATION - ASSIGNMENTS All assignments are given to help you learn. I do not give out “busy work” as there is too much to cover this year. If you don’t see the point in an assignment, ask! All assignments must be completed. When students fail this course it is almost always because they do not complete the work or fail to show up for class!

EXPECTATIONS Respect the rights and feelings of others. Be considerate. Do not disturb people who are working. Leave other people’s belongings alone. Never vandalize. Do not interrupt when others are talking. Raise your hand to get on a speaking list or to ask a question or request permission for something. Cell phones must be turned off during this class. Electronic devices may not be used during tests. There may be the occasional time that I will ask you to use your electronic device for educational purposes. For the most part your phone is out of site! Thanks for being respectful. It’s ok to be away from your phone…really it is… “College students who frequently text message during class have difficulty staying attentive to classroom lectures and consequently risk having poor learning outcomes, new research shows.” science daily

LEARN AND ENJOY Psychology is fun. If it wasn’t, I would not be here! Learn and become a more educated and interesting person. Figure out what makes people, and the world, tick. Work toward scholarships in grade 12. Possible Psychology club at the school? Whose in?
