DAY 2! Objectives Catalyst (Answer on catalyst sheet) SWBAT follow classroom procedures SWBAT state classroom expectations Catalyst (Answer on catalyst sheet) What are the big goals for this class? When you come into class in the morning what are the expectations? What are the expectations for arranging your desks into groups?

Welcome to Physics, Fall 2009!!! Today Demo… Review syllabus and expectations Positive incentive systems Skits Can I get a dollar? Can I get one? Diagnostic Tomorrow Diagnostic cont’d

DEMO! I have the coolest demo EVER! Vinegar and Baking soda!!!! Seriously, this will blow your mind… What happens when you mix these two chemicals? What do you think will happen when I pour the mixture on this candle??

Independent Reading Time Have them read the syllabus. We will go over the most important points only.

Syllabus – Materials 1.5” binder, with four sections Syllabus and Tracking resumes (in front) Weekly sheets/Notes Assignments Tests, quizzes, and review packets Vocabulary Biology resumes = used to track progress toward Big Goal. No need to go into detail yet. Explain next Monday, when we do tracking for the first time. Vocabulary = section with 26 sheets of blank lined paper, A-Z. Will write new vocabulary words there.

Team Points Each day we will tally up team points for the class. Points will be rewarded for: Entire class completing homework Nobody putting their head down during class No uniform violations No cell phones/electronic devices out No tardies No trash on the floor Desks straight at the end of class No talking during the Catalyst No cursing No talking during exit ticket Wild Card Biology resumes = used to track progress toward Big Goal. No need to go into detail yet. Explain next Monday, when we do tracking for the first time. Vocabulary = section with 26 sheets of blank lined paper, A-Z. Will write new vocabulary words there.

Individual Points I will also hand out “McKnight’s Positive Points” when I see a student doing something positive in the class. Every two weeks we will have a “McKnight’s Positive Points” raffle. The prizes will vary from week-to-week Biology resumes = used to track progress toward Big Goal. No need to go into detail yet. Explain next Monday, when we do tracking for the first time. Vocabulary = section with 26 sheets of blank lined paper, A-Z. Will write new vocabulary words there.

Expectations Tardiness Cell phones Staying on task during group work Being respectful (when someone else is talking, or is wrong) Preparedness (binder, pen, paper, positive attitude) Picking up trash Silently and immediately working on catalyst and Exit ticket After explaining the last bullet point, have students get up, leave classroom, re-enter properly.

Expectations SKITS! You have 5min as a group to come up with a GOOD example of an expectation and a BAD example of an expectation. Reflection Now that you have seen good and bad examples I want you to write down these expectations and why it is important to follow them.

Each group will decide… Three people in each group will have a job. Each member is INTEGRAL to keeping your group on track to being the group of the week.

Here are the jobs Are you ready??

Task Master Task Master TASK MASTER

Logistic Logistics LOGISTICS

Logistics This person will be in charge of gathering materials for the group.

Clean-up Clean-up CLEAN-UP

Clean-up No trash around your group All the desks are in the right place at the end of the day.

Task Master You are in charge of keeping your group on task. If someone is sleeping, it is your job to wake them up. If someone is not working, it is your job to get them on task.

V.I.P. – By application only Are you a V.I.P.? Tutor Data Entry Manager Each of these positions will be rewarded by a free meal at your favorite fast food place (paid for by me!) every 9 weeks

DEMO Numero Dos! I need a dollar… Point out class mastery tracker, point out “class culture” day threshold at 90%.

Homework Student surveys Parent surveys Bring binder with dividers! $10 lab fee Since I don’t know how long periods will run, this slide will stay up for a while and any flex time will be used to begin work on the homework. It should take about 30 minutes to get to here. If periods are (heaven forbid) normal length, keep going.

Exit Ticket Procedures Move desks into rows Take out exit ticket sheets and silently start on exit ticket question Once you are done place your exit ticket sheet in the correct pocket of your group folder Grading Graded for effort, not accuracy But if you copy or do not try you earn a 0

Exit Questions What happens during the last 10min of every class? What is the responsibility of the task master? List three expectations for this class. DON’T FORGET: The last person in your group to leave the room turns in your group folder

Syllabus – Consequences Warning, name on board Lunch detention After-school detention, phone call home Referral Consequences are cumulative and reset weekly

Exit Question Procedure Notes away, rows, silent classroom Grading Graded for effort, not accuracy But if you copy or do not try you earn a 0 Exit question = assesses THE most important things learned that day. If you can answer the exit question correctly, then you know you learned what you needed to learn. The exit question is a way for me to understand how well you understood the lesson. It’s a waste of my time if you copy or leave it blank

Syllabus – Materials 1.5” binder, with six sections Syllabus and biology resumes Notes Weekly sheets Classwork and homework Tests, quizzes, and review packets Vocabulary Biology resumes = used to track progress toward Big Goal. No need to go into detail yet. Explain next Monday, when we do tracking for the first time. Vocabulary = section with 26 sheets of blank lined paper, A-Z. Will write new vocabulary words there.

Projected end of first day?

What Is Biology? Biology is the study of life Biology is… “Bio-” = life “-ology” = study of Biology is… Making glow in the dark fish Why camels have humps, and you don’t Why we grow old and die What lets us understand the world around us Green text = I’m teaching you a definition. Write the definition in the vocabulary section of your binder!

Glow-in-the-dark fish are AWESOME!!!

Why do camels have humps? See if they can figure it out. Discussion. Why do camels have humps?

Why don’t we? See if they can figure it out. Discussion. Segue into what separates humans from animals, in general? (Lots of kids will say language: note that lots of animals have REAL languages, i.e., languages with grammar/syntax, complex vocabularies. Bees communicate via the waggle dance, elephants communicate via stomping their feet and creating sound waves, etc.) Talk about opposable thumbs  tools, culture, civilization. Evolution. Why don’t we?

Why do we grow old and die? (As opposed to living forever.) Competing theories, we’re still not entirely sure the reason. (A) Cells are damaged by “free radicals,” oxidized in the same manner as an apple left out in the sun. (B) Energy conservation. Since we could be killed by accident at any time, smarter for the body to concentrate on us having children than maintaining itself. (C) Wear and tear over time overwhelms body’s ability to repair itself. May be why exercise  longer life. Talk about impact that humans have on environment. What would happen if we lived longer? More individual impact on the environment, but would probably have fewer babies. Overpopulation less of an issue? Talk about overpopulation, resource use, consumption. Why do we grow old and die?

Understanding the world around us Planet Earth, starting at 18:45 (fast seasons change)  birds of paradise dancing, shark attack, elephants wandering through desert. During cuts to rainforest, talk about deforestation and its effect on the environment (loss of plants that could be used for medicine, less CO2 uptake/O2 output, extinction, effect of extinction on food web). During cuts to desert, talk about desertification; we’re using up water, causing deserts to expand. Discussion: what would happen to humanity if this keeps up? During cuts to ocean, talk about rising sea levels due to global warming (make sure to explain what global warming is first!!!), discuss what this means for humans. If projected global warming continues, most of Louisiana coastline will be underwater! Eco-refugees: people who live on coast will flee elsewhere  overpopulation, starvation, sanitation issues… Understanding the world around us

So Why Do We Care? Biology is cool! Want money? Biology is on the GEE (Graduate Exit Exam), which you need to pass to graduate high school. The more education you get, the more money you earn. On average, college graduates earn $22,000 more than high-school graduates, every year.

Mini Scholars Head: What is the burning question in your head? What is one question you would like someone to answer? Heart: What do you hold closest to your heart? What do you care about more than anything else? Stomach: What makes you sick to your stomach? What really upsets you? Hands: What do you bring to this class? What is your unique contribution? Feet: What do you want to walk out of here with at the end of the year? What do you want to accomplish? Each group needs to send one person up to my desk to get… 1 pair of markers (for the whole group), 1 cardboard cut-out (for each person) Save at least 40 minutes for this activity if you want to finish it in class. If periods are super short, then I’ll give this as homework.

Exit Question Why do YOU want to study biology? DON’T FORGET: Put your homework and weekly packets into the LEFT SIDE of your group folder. Count your team points, and let Mr. LY know. The last person in your group to leave the room turns in your group folder
