KNITTING FOR BEGINNERS Knitting Your First Scarf

Preparation Getting Ready to Knit Your First Scarf!  Yarn (About two spools, depending on how long and thick you want your scarf)  Knitting Needles  Needle size depends on the thickness of your yarn, so there are many different sizes. To buy the right size: Find the numbers on the back of your yarn package. Find the size knitting needles that correlate to that number. The thicker the yarn, the bigger the needles. Example: My yarn is thick, so the package suggested size 13 (9mm) needles. What You Will NeedBuying the Right Needle Size

Tips and Pointers Keep These in Mind as You Go!  Remember to keep the yarn tight in your hand as you go, but not too tight- remember, you need to be able to fit your needle through the stitches!  Pay attention to your knitting so that you don’t ‘drop a stitch’.  Don’t worry if you make a mistake- luckily, knitting is simply a series of slip knots, so any mistakes can be undone!  When taking a break from your project, always push the stitches down to the bottom of the needles so you don’t loose any stitches!

Casting On Starting Your Scarf!  Step One: Your First Two Stitches  Drape the yarn over your thumb and pointer finger, leaving a tail of about 2 ft. Gather the excess yarn with your other fingers.  Using one needle, pull the middle of the yarn down into an ‘upside down A’ shape.

Casting On Starting Your Scarf!  Step One: Your First Two Stitches (cont.)  Pull the needle under the loop made by your thumb, over the loop made by your pointer finger, and back over the loop made by your thumb.  This will give you your first two stitches!

Casting On Starting Your Scarf!  Step Two: Your First Row  Continue on in the same pattern as you did for step one.  Do this for however wide you would like your scarf to be.  Example: I wanted a thicker scarf, so I knitted about 20 stitches for my first row.

Casting On Starting Your Scarf! Need to See Step Two Again?

Basic Knitting Making the Body of Your Scarf!  The Basic Stitch:  Place the needle which you cast yarn onto in your left hand, and the bare needle in your right. Hold the yarn in your right hand as well.  Take the needle in your right hand and put the tip up through the first stitch on the left needle.

Basic Knitting Making the Body of Your Scarf!  The Basic Stitch (Cont.)  Pull the yarn from your right hand around behind the right needle.  Take the right needle and put it down under the stitch on the left needle, pulling the stitch off of the needle.

Basic Knitting Making the Body of Your Scarf!  The Basic Stitch (Cont.)  Pull the yarn through.  Repeat this stitch until the row is finished.  This will be the same steps you follow throughout the rest of your scarf!

Binding Off Finishing Your Scarf!  When your scarf is the length that suits you, begin a new row with two stitches as usual.  Take the first stitch of the row and pull it over the second stitch and off the needle.  Make another stitch as usual, and repeat these steps until the whole scarf is cast off of the needle, finishing the scarf with a knot.

Binding Off Finishing Your Scarf! Need to See That Step Again?

Congrats! You are now able to knit your first scarf. Your Finished Product!
