Hoists and Cranes

Terminal Objective Understand the basic terminology and safety associated Hoists, cranes, and rigging

Enabling Objectives Identify a number of DO’s and DONT’s around rigging Explain the uses of various types of hoists Be able to identify some basic crane hand signals

Basic RIGGING Practices All personnel shall be kept clear of lifted or suspended loads. Keep all personnel and body parts clear of the rigging hardware. Keep all personnel and body parts from under the load. Shocking the load is prohibited. A sling shall not be pulled from a load when the load is resting on the sling.

Prior to use the slings and all rigging hardware, fastenings and attachments shall be inspected for damage or defects. Additional inspections shall be performed during sling use. When warranted, damaged or defective slings shall be removed from service.

Basic Sling Utilization Practices Keep sling angles as close to vertical as possible. Ensure sling capacity is enough for load. Protect slings from abrasions or sharp edges. Do not misuse slings.
