School Counselor Student Services Job Responsibilities

Purpose School Counselors collaborate with the principal, teachers and parents Promote leadership and advocacy for students Student success is a primary goal and preventive services are promoted Academic, Career, and Personal/social developmental services for students are provided for students.

Major Functions Communicate with the administrators, staff and students Provide services through the following means: Guidance Curriculum, Individual Planning, Preventive and Responsive Services, System Support

Guidance Curriculum Provides integration of the guidance curriculum into the school curriculum following the Standard Course of Study Provides developmentally appropriate and preventive counseling programs and activities for students, parents and staff.

Individual Student Planning Assists students individually or in groups concerning academic, career, personal/social skills, goals and plans Interprets and utilizes test information regarding student academic progress Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students in educational and career planning.

Responsive Services Provides individual and group counseling to students when referred regarding student academic and career issues Consults with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and community resources regarding identified student concerns

System Support Provides appropriate information to school staff regarding the comprehensive school counseling program Assists teachers, parents/guardians, and community stakeholders regarding student data Provides and participates in professional development Incorporates available technology resources into the school counseling program Adheres to the laws, policies, and ethics of the school counseling profession

Accountability Annual program assessment Utilizes attendance, discipline and academic information to revise and adjust program for successive years
