The Purpose of a School Counselor School counselors provide students with academic, personal/social and career development. Assist parents in school meetings, offer resources and help provide parents with a better understanding of their child’s needs. Consult and collaborate with key educational officials and LEAs.

Discipline The school counselor is not a disciplinarian, BUT will offer help and assistance after a consequence is given by the teacher/administrator.

Mandatory Reporting State regulations have made all educators mandated state reporters. Child abuse and/or neglect Suspected abuse and/or neglect (physical, emotional, sexual, mental, and imminent risk)

Childline Lackawanna County Children and Youth CY 47 Report of Suspected Child Abuse

Children and Youth Timeline Make the oral report by calling the agency. Send by mail the CY 47 form within 48 hours. Agency will investigate in a timely fashion depending on the case. The cases are usually founded or unfounded within 30 days. Agency workers may come to a child’s school, home, or bus stop to interview the child and/or family members. Your report is always anonymous to the family.
