Environmental Variation  To understand how environmental variation occurs

Environment  Look at the pictures of Posh below - what differences can you see? What could cause these differences?

Environment  The main differences seen (except hair colour) is that her hair length and her weight vary greatly in the pictures. These features are affected by environmental factors  **be careful with hair colour - this is inherited, however we can temporarily change its appearance using dyes  The main differences seen (except hair colour) is that her hair length and her weight vary greatly in the pictures. Environmental Variation  Characteristics of animals and plants can be affected by factors such as climate, diet, accidents, culture and lifestyle  If you eat too much you will become heavier, and if you eat too little you will become lighter  A plant in the shade of a big tree will not be able to photosynthesise as quickly as one in the sunshine, so it will be smaller  Variation in a feature as a result of the surroundings, is called environmental variation  Characteristics of animals and plants can be affected by factors such as climate, diet, accidents, culture and lifestyle  If you eat too much you will become heavier, and if you eat too little you will become lighter  A plant in the shade of a big tree will not be able to photosynthesise as quickly as one in the sunshine, so it will be smaller  Variation in a feature as a result of the surroundings, is called environmental variation

Genes & Environment  Complete the worksheet, filling in the missing words (then stick this in your book) Genetic information Genes Characteristics Environment Tattoo Scars Temperature Water Environment Height Tall Genes Nutrients

Variation & Variety  Variation can occur within a species (i.e. some people have blue eyes, others have brown eyes)  A great amount of variation also occurs between species (i.e. guerillas are generally hairier than humans)!  Your task is to look at two different species of potato, and identify some characteristics (e.g. size; colour; mass). You then need to identify how these characteristics vary between the two species, i.e.  how does colour vary between the two species?  how does size vary between the two species?  Once you have decided on the characteristics you are to measure, design a results table in your book…  Variation can occur within a species (i.e. some people have blue eyes, others have brown eyes)  A great amount of variation also occurs between species (i.e. guerillas are generally hairier than humans)!  Your task is to look at two different species of potato, and identify some characteristics (e.g. size; colour; mass). Variation Results SpeciesCharacteristic 1 (e.g. colour) Characteristic 2 (e.g. size) Characteristic 3 (e.g. mass) Potato species 1 Potato species 2 Remember, look at a few examples from each species so you can record an accurate representation of that characteristic The write a conclusion in your book, identifying how one species is different from the other. Why do you think this variation exists (have you collected enough data)?
