PODSERVER, INSTAGRAM AND TUMBLR. By Casey

PODSERVER Current format for GEOG – 3530/8530 Uses HTML code  Relatively simple coding language to learn  Reinforces HTML learned in the lab portion of class  Looks fairly outdated Allows for PDF uploads without using another media uploader Does not crop graphics based on pixel size Students can manipulate individual web pages Uploads are easiest from computers, but tablets or phones with web browsers will work

TUMBLR “Microblogging site on steroids” - Cameron Chapman ( ) Pictures, Videos, Links, and Audio can be uploaded  PDFs can be uploaded but must use an external media uploader (blog or FTP access and place in a website directory) Updated design compared to Podserver  Multitude of free blog formats to choose from  Students without computer programing background will find it difficult to modify formats, because languages other than HTML could be used Easy uploads from computers, tablets or phones Does not crop pictures due to pixel size

INSTAGRAM Social networking service which allows users to take video or pictures and upload them to Instagram or other social networking sites  Pictures must be 1936x1936 pixels…Instagram will crop the rest off Does not allow PDFs to be uploaded Images must be uploaded through a photo album or camera roll and can’t be easily uploaded from a computer (easiest to use phone or tablet)

CONCLUSION Instagram (in my opinion) is not a good option for GEOG – 3530/8530 because it is not built to easily upload graphics that are not images from the camera roll of a phone or tablet Tumblr has potential, however the fact it doesn’t support PDF upload independently makes switching to the site as a medium for GEOG – 3530/8530 less feasible (still my favorite) Podserver allows for all formats used in GEOG – 3530/8530 to be uploaded independent of an outside site (unless the file size is too big) and is probably the best option as a medium for GEOG – 3530/8530  Students and Professor should work together to ensure uniform naming of links and projects
