OBJECTIVES To determine whether there are significant differences in: socio-epidemiological variables, symptom severity and hospitalization resources between bipolar patients with and without personality disorder.

METHODS  Observational study  Authorized by the Research Ethics Committee  Chart review of all bipolar patients admitted between 2000 and 2010  Aged > 18 years at last hospitalization on mania  We compared socio-demographic, clinical and hospitalization resources data for patients with/without comorbid personality disorder (ICD9 criteria) diagnosis

No clinical differences in manic episode except for:  Trend to a higher percentage of previous suicide attempts in bipolar patients with personality disorder (27% versus 15%, p=0.078).  Personality disorder patients had more previous suicide attempts (0.86 versus 0.29, p=0.003).  No differences in CGI were present at admission, neither at discharge.

CONCLUSIONS  Comorbid personality disorder in our sample was low and has not been associated to socio-epidemiological differences regarding bipolar patients.  Our findings show an association between comorbidity with personality disorder and previous suicide attempts as well as with more depressive and manic episodes of bipolar illness and an increased use of hospital resources over a decade.  BIBLIOGRAPHY: Apfelbaum S et al (2013); Nieto K et al (2009); Zimmerman M et al (2010);
