MoEDAL Collaboration Meeting 21 June 2012 D.LACARRERE7 Infrastructure – Support from CERN UNDERGROUND (UX85A & UX85B) Installation of MoEDAL (modules + sensors) around VELO (UX85B). Installation of TIMEPIX Electronics (LV, PC, network) in D2 (UX85A). Cabling from UX85B up to UX85A (roughly 80 m). Scaffoldings for accessing to upper parts. Buffer areas for exposed NDT stacks before shipping to Bologna Radiation traceability of items using LHCb procedure & data base (proposal : MoEDAL is considered as a sub-system of LHCb detector) => great simplification (code bars, existing database,….) MoEDAL Collaboration Meeting 21 June 2012 D.LACARRERE9 Access Requirements MoEDAL Personnel will follow (of course) the CERN & LHCb access procedures in force. No access before getting the green light from the CERN (DGS/RP or LHCb) Radioprotection Experts (RPE) during short technical stops and long shunt-downs of the LHC Machine. All the MoEDAL installation or maintenance activities will be prepared in advance and scheduled in agreement with the LHCb Operation & Maintenance activities, in particular with the VELO & RICH1 activities. The co-activities are not recommended due to the tight working space in that area (RB84 area) => IMPACT DOCUMENTS For working at the ceiling, the vacuum beam-pipe should be at the atmospheric pressure (Neon filled), in particular for the 1st complete deployment and later for removing exposed NDT detectors. The VELO vessel should be protected using appropriate plastic foils (in agreement with the VELO Team) + appropriate scaffoldings required.

MoEDAL Collaboration Meeting 21 June 2012 D.LACARRERE10 Flammability : The rules on the use of MoEDAL’s plastic NTDs at Point 8 are detailed in the TIS (IS41 document). A SC/GS-GC derogation request for the use of the non-metallic materials not conforming to the safety instructions IS41, was submitted by MoEDAL to the CERN Safety Commission (SC) in Request was approved (edms no : May 2008). Metallic materials used for the holders and the housings of the NTDs must be non-magnetic materials (Aluminium) and/or Stainless Steel for such as inserts & screws. Handling of exposed Modules : for removing the slightly radioactive components from the detector area, MoEDAL will adopt & endorse the LHCb procedures (including traceability of the items). Then, the Uni. of Bologna/INFN & CERN protocols will be followed for the shipping, receiving and tracking of all MoEDAL detector modules shipped to Bologna. Safety

MoEDAL Collaboration Meeting 21 June 2012 D.LACARRERE11 General Conditions - Reminder GENERAL CONDITIONS applicable to Experiments performed at CERN. Experiments require approval by the CERN Research Board & the Director – General after consideration of written proposals submitted to the appropriate experiments committees (*). DOCUMENT (in brief) SCOPE OF APPLICATION PARTIES & THEIR REPRESENTATION BASIC DOCUMENTS GOVERNING THE EXECUTION OF EXPERIMENT ORGANISATION OF THE COLLABORATION CERN’s OBLIGATIONS AS HOST LABORATORY OBLIGATIONS OF THE COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FINAL PROVISIONS (*) details, please refer to the original document – General Conditions applicable to Experiments at CERN (20 February 2008 – 12 pages).

MoEDAL Collaboration Meeting 21 June 2012 D.LACARRERE12 Summary MoEDAL Experiment is designed to search for the magnetic monopoles & the highly ionizing particles at the LHC IP 8. It is a passive detector, relatively small (25x10 m2) attached on the walls, modular array, relatively quick to install and to replace modules, however appropriate scaffoldings will be needed to reach the upper parts of the walls and the ceiling inside the VELO area. No major interferences with the LHCb sub-detectors (VELO & RICH1) and the LHC Vacuum activities during the shunt-downs are expected, except maybe 2-3 weeks for 1 st complete deployment. In order to avoid co-activities in the RB84 area, high priority will be given to the LHCb VELO and RICH1 maintenance activities. Access to MoEDAL will be always given with the LHCb agreement. For M&O, a detailed planning of the LHCb & MoEDAL shunt-down activities will be mandatory in order to manage & share access and priorities in a common agreement with LHCb & MoEDAL. MoEDAL is already on the road. We need to continue discussion with LHCb Collaboration about the evolution of MoEDAL detector.
