Ch. 9 Lesson 1 Korea and the Spread of Chinese Influence Devon Kelley, Jamie Fletcher, and Ali Paris

Introduction The Chinese dynasties influenced much of the world because of their many achievements and distinguished culture. Chinese culture and ideas such as language, religion, and government system, spread to Korea and then Japan.

Summary In 108 B.C, North Western Korea was colonized by the Han dynasty in China, which set up military posts Trade flourished between the two cultures Buddhism spread south from China to Korea Began sending Buddhist scholars and priests to Japan Japan’s Shinto religion was influenced by China’s Daoism Japanese government imposed Chinese-style changes called Taika Reforms

Taika Reforms All farm land in provinces belonged to the emperor Land was separated into small plots for provincial nobles to over see Small plots gave the government more control and wealth from taxes Reduced power of the provincial nobles Little affect on the lives of peasants

Religions Buddhism and Shinto Buddhism: stay in the moment and to meditate to rid pain and suffering Shinto: revolves around nature and spirits

Ideas Spread to Japan Language, government, and religion were the main ideas that spread to Japan from China

Conclusion China had a great influence on Korea and Japan. For example, the provinces (nobles and peasants) were unhappy with the Taika Reforms because it reduced their power and broke up their land. The provincial nobles and peasants started to gain more power because the Taika Reforms (emperor) was beginning to weaken.
