Scanning and DL/UL parameter acquisition Process in the SS On initialization or after signal loss, the SS shall acquire a DL ch. The PHY has achieved sync. Receive the DL-MAP (Lost DL- MAP interval) and DCD (T1 interval) messages SS receives a UCD message for UL ch. UL parameters are valid after receiving UL-MAP messages. If no UL ch. can be found after timeout period, the SS shall continuous scanning for another DL ch. 7 Note: Figure from IEEE Std

Ranging The process of acquiring the correct timing offset and power adjustments 8 Note: Figure from IEEE Std

Negotiate Basic Capabilities & Authorization/Key Exchange Negotiate Basic Capabilities SBC_REQ : SS’s capabilities set to “on” SBC_RSP : SS’s and BS’s capabilities set to “on” 9 Authorization & Key Exchange If PKM is enabled, the BS and SS shall perform authorization and key exchange. SS BS SBC_REQ SBC_RSP

Registration The process by which the SS is allowed entry into the network REG-REQ and REG_RSP include IP version 10 SS BS REG_REQ REG_RSP Note: Figure from IEEE Std

Options (for managed SS) 11 Establishment of IP connectivity Establishing time of day (RFC868) Transfer of Operational Parameters (after DHCP) Note: Figure from IEEE Std

Establishing provisioned connections 12 Establish provisioned connections Creation of service flows may be initiated by either BS (mandatory capability) or by SS (optional capability) SS-InitiatedBS-Initiated Note: Figure from IEEE Std

Tunneling for IEEE Considerations or issues How will we make the tunnel for pre-registration? R9 Tunnel : WiMAX defines R9 protocol header MIH Tunnel –Define the MIH message header for Tunneling Need the compatibility between R9 tunnel and MIH tunnel? L2 Messages through Tunnel Originally, DL-MAP, UL-MAP, DCD and UDC are sent periodically from BS to MS. SFF emulates virtual BS. Can SFF send these messages periodically to MS through the tunnel? One method is MS to request these messages to SFF using new MIH message. Another method ??? 14
